“INSIDE” – THEY ARE BODIES, PERHAPS GEOGRAPHIES Jaime Prades’ exhibition “Dentro” represents a significant leap in his plastic expression. I am fascinated by the big change, as if the artist, instead of crossing a bridge, has decided to cross the river by jumping straight from one margin to the other. I do not know why he took this leap, but I know Jaime Prades was driven by his graphic experiences, his plastic knowledge and his memory. Therefore, I don’t see it as a breach or course deviation, but as the affirmation of the other margin of the river. “Dentro” certainly represents a new plastic articulation that is renewed and expanded to new territories. His current work does not need allegories and narratives that, in a way, have populated his previous language. Now, the artist addresses essential graphic elements. The hatching in his current work does not establish wefts and warps; rather, it builds parallelism and binary rhythms. The lines form sets that reflect and propagate in space giving life, volume and dynamism. Jaime Prades uses restrained hues that establish both dialogue among one another as well as an ambiguous relationship between figure and background (they take turns) to form a cohesive set. The lines/volumes occupy the space and create choreographies – as shoals that move with extraordinary beauty in the ocean. “Dentro" are sinuous bodies that expand beyond the canvas. They are, perhaps, geographies. Fabio Magalhães |
